Choose from our wall of bisque-fired ceramic pieces. Make sure it's clean and free of dust before starting.
Gather Your Materials:
- Ceramic glazes or underglazes
- Brushes in various sizes
- A palette or tile for mixing colors
- Water container for rinsing brushes
- A sponge or damp cloth for clean-up
Plan Your Design:
Take a moment to visualize your design. If needed, sketch it out lightly on the ceramic piece with a pencil.
Leave the Bottom Unpainted:
Avoid painting the bottom of your piece where it will rest on the kiln shelf. Glaze on the bottom can cause your piece to stick to the shelf during firing, which can ruin your work and damage the kiln.
Start with Light Colors:
Begin painting with lighter colors first. This helps prevent darker colors from bleeding into lighter areas. Apply 3 coats of glaze for even coverage, letting each coat dry before adding the next.
Layer and Blend Colors:
Use multiple layers to build up depth and richness. For blending, wet your brush slightly and blend the edges of two colors together on the piece.
Detailing and Fine Lines:
For fine details, use a small brush. Work carefully to keep lines crisp. You can also use stencils or masking tape to create clean edges and patterns.
Clean Up Mistakes:
If you make a mistake, you can gently wipe it away with a damp cloth or sponge before the glaze dries. Be careful not to overwork the area.
Let it Dry:
Allow the glaze to dry completely. Depending on the humidity, this can take 30 minutes to an hour. You want the piece to be dry to the touch before handling it. So feel free to leave it on the table and we will take care of it for you.
Sign Your Piece and Take a Photo:
Don’t forget to sign your name or initials on the bottom of your piece the back of a paint brush. BE SURE TO TAKE A PHOTO OF YOUR ART. It helps us locate it when you return to pickup your art.
Kiln Firing
Kiln Firing Time: If your piece requires kiln firing, please allow up to 3 weeks for this process to be completed. This timeframe ensures that we can carefully manage the firing schedule, allowing each piece to dry properly before firing and ensuring the kiln operates efficiently.
Why Does It Take 3 Weeks?
1 Drying Time: Your piece needs to be thoroughly dried before it goes into the kiln to prevent cracking or exploding due to moisture.
2 Kiln Scheduling: We batch pieces together for efficient firing. This helps us maintain high quality and energy efficiency.
3 Multiple Firings: Some pieces require a bisque firing followed by a glaze firing, each taking time to complete.
When can I pick up my piece?
We will notify you via email once your piece is ready for pickup. Expect this notification within 3 weeks if you signed in.
Can I see my piece before it’s fired?
Unfortunately, we cannot show pieces before firing as they are very fragile and could easily break.
What if my piece doesn’t turn out as expected?
Pottery is an art form that takes practice. We offer a range of classes to help you improve your skills and create pieces you’ll love.
Disclaimer: Kilns can be unpredictable and accidents happen. Your items might break, chip, or explode. We offer a complimentary class for you to remake your item. DRIP does not offer refunds. Starting July 1, 2024 we will hold all items for 2 months after they come of of the kiln. We do not offer shipping.
